A Lesson in Surrender: Trusting God’s Plan Over Worldly Success
February 20, 2025A Father’s Faith: Overcoming Challenges Through Sacrifice and God’s Provision
February 20, 2025There are moments in life when the best thing you can do for a friend is simply show up. It’s in the quiet acts of presence, in being there without trying to fix, that we truly make a difference. This is the story of how showing up—no matter how imperfectly—can change a life and strengthen both faith and friendship.
Why Presence Matters More Than Words
Craig’s friend Ken was in despair, he felt utterly isolated, overcome with sadness that darkened every day, often thinking of ending his life. Craig reflected, “I’ve had times when I was angry or frustrated, but I never thought, ‘it’d be a whole lot better to just end it.’”
This sense of helplessness initially led Craig to pray, hoping that spiritual support would be enough. Surely prayer only will help, he thought. “Doesn’t that relieve me of responsibility for doing something more?” However, prayer was not enough he soon realized as God’s prompting asked him to do more. Unbeknownst to Craig, his prayer became a call to act beyond words.
At first, Craig’s wife suggested connecting Ken’s wife with someone who had experienced similar grief. This provided some comfort to Ken’s family, yet Craig felt that wasn’t enough. A persistent thought came to him: join the YMCA with Ken, get up at dawn, and work out together. “I kept thinking, ‘No, no, give me another option,’” Craig recounted. But the thought wouldn’t go away, and he eventually realized that God wasn’t letting him off the hook.
When Craig finally acted on his calling, it began as small, grueling steps in the early morning. Ken would arrive each day in low spirits, but over time, he found a reason to get out of bed. Craig listened, providing the empathy that Ken needed. Craig recalled, “Some days he’d just vent about his job, his boss, or whatever was weighing him down.” Over the months, Ken’s outlook transformed. He eventually shared, “I love my job now. I get to solve problems, and people appreciate it.” Craig realized that his efforts weren’t miraculous—he simply “showed up.” But for Ken, that companionship was everything.
The Transformative Power of Presence
When Jesus ministered to people, He didn’t just speak from a distance—He showed up. He walked alongside the broken, dined with the outcasts, and wept with the grieving. His presence was His ministry.
We often think we must do something grand to make an impact, but the truth is, God works through small, faithful actions. A simple act of service, a quiet prayer beside a friend, or just sitting in the same space with someone who is hurting—these moments can be life-changing.
Final Reflection: Will You Show Up?
God calls us to be present in the lives of those around us. In a world filled with distractions, making time for others is an act of faith, love, and obedience.
Who in your life needs you to show up today? Take a step of faith and be there. It may make all the difference.
